Season Broad pattern
Spring Variable, often mild, sometimes rainy or dusty
Summer Hot across much of China; humid in many eastern and southern cities
Autumn Often mild and comfortable
Winter Cold in the north, much milder in the far south

Regional contrasts

  • Beijing (北京): cold, dry winters; hot summers.
  • Harbin (哈尔滨): severe winter cold.
  • Shanghai (上海): humid summers and damp winters.
  • Guangzhou (广州) and Shenzhen (深圳): mild winters, humid summers.

  • Northwest China: dry, large day-night temperature swings.
