HANDBOOK  /  PART 3  /  UNDERSTANDING CHINA

Ethnic diversity in China

What you need to know

China officially recognizes 56 ethnic groups: the Han ethnic group (汉族) and 55 ethnic minority groups.

For travelers, this helps explain major regional differences in language, food, architecture, religion, festivals, music and clothing.

Five autonomous regions

Region Chinese
Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region 内蒙古自治区
Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region 广西壮族自治区
Tibet Autonomous Region 西藏自治区
Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region 宁夏回族自治区
Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region 新疆维吾尔自治区

Yunnan is particularly diverse

Yunnan Province (云南省) is one of China's strongest regions for experiencing different local cultures, including Bai, Dai, Naxi, Yi, Hani and Tibetan traditions.

Muslim traditions in northwest China

Look for:

清真 — Qīngzhēn — Halal

in Muslim restaurants and food businesses.

Culture is not frozen in the past

Ethnic-minority regions are modern places.

Avoid treating communities as living museum exhibits.

Photography

Traditional clothing does not automatically mean someone is a performer.

For a close portrait, ask permission when practical.
