HANDBOOK  /  PART 5  /  RAIL

High-speed rail in China

What you need to know

China's high-speed rail system is one of the easiest ways to travel between major cities.

It works especially well when city centers are well connected by rail, the train journey is only a few hours and airport transfers would add significant time.

Main high-speed train codes

The most common categories are:

  • G — 高速动车组
  • D — 动车组
  • C — 城际动车组

For most visitors:

G trains are usually the fastest intercity option.

Routes where rail works particularly well

Examples include:

  • Beijing (北京) ↔ Xi'an (西安);
  • Shanghai (上海) ↔ Suzhou (苏州);
  • Shanghai ↔ Hangzhou (杭州);
  • Chengdu (成都) ↔ Chongqing (重庆).

Why rail can beat flying

Rail often offers easier city access, less airport buffer time, no baggage carousel and comfortable city-center arrival.

Your passport is important

Chinese rail uses real-name ticketing (实名制购票).

Book with the same passport you will use at the station.

If an automated gate does not read your passport correctly, use:

Manual Channel (人工通道).

Luggage

High-speed trains normally provide overhead racks, luggage areas and space near carriage ends.

Pack so you can move your own luggage through the station and onto the train.

The practical takeaway

For city-to-city journeys in eastern and central China:

check high-speed rail before checking flights.
