The main thing to watch for
Electric bicycles are extremely common in Chinese cities.
They can be quiet, quick and close to pedestrian space.
Before stepping across a bike lane:
look both ways.
Understand the street layout
A common arrangement is:
building → sidewalk → bike lane → road
The edge of the sidewalk is not necessarily the edge of motor traffic.
Turning vehicles
Stay aware of vehicles turning across pedestrian crossings, even when you have a walk signal.
Chongqing and hilly cities
In cities such as Chongqing (重庆), walking routes can involve steep slopes, stairs, elevators and pedestrian bridges.
A short map distance does not always mean an easy walk.
